A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon a list I did not know existed:
1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die
Instantly, I was curious. How many of these albums can I honestly say I have heard in their entirety? Well… Unfortunately, after a quick look over this incredible list, I can’t say I have not listened to many of them in recent memory. If I have (and there are certainly plenty of albums here that I know about), I haven’t listened to all of it or I can’t recall whether I have or not.
I have always been trying to broaden my music horizons, and also listen to a lot of genre-defining music most recently. This has lead me to realise there is really a lot of stuff I haven’t had the chance to appreciate and learn from.
Recently, I have also been really big on tracking what I listen to (I’ve got a few posts already on the blog cataloguing all of my 2018-released listens (Jan | Feb | Mar)), to the point where I now have a whole spreadsheet dedicated to the matter – it’s a constant work in progress, I thought I may as well start tackling this list from scratch!
I’m probably going to do semi-regular updates (perhaps a mid-year update if I’m not bored by then?) on this just to get a rough idea on how well I’m pacing. If anyone else is interested, have a few links: Wikipedia, Discogs, List Challenges. A little bit of Googling and you should be able to find someone else has already thrown the list into an Excel spreadsheet also.
I should also note that there are a few albums on my listened list that I do recall listening to within the last few months, so this volume may look a little stacked for such a short period of time!
Without further ado, these are the albums I have knocked off of the list so far:
1966 – The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds
1967 – Pink Floyd: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
1970 – Black Sabbath: Paranoid
1971 – Yes: Fragile
1973 – Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
1975 – Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here
1975 – Queen: A Night at the Opera
1979 – Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures
1979 – Pink Floyd: The Wall
1980 – Joy Division: Closer
1988 – Metallica: …And Justice For All
1991 – Metallica: Metallica
1991 – Nirvana: Nevermind
1992 – Pantera: A Vulgar Display of Power
1993 – Nirvana: In Utero
1994 – Portishead: Dummy
1999 – Eminem: The Slim Shady LP
1999 – Metallica: S&M
2000 – Eminem: The Marshal Mathers LP
2004 – Green Day: American Idiot
2007 – MGMT: Oracular Spectacular
Current Progress: 21/1001
Just barely a measly 2%
Still a very big list to battle through but hopefully its something I can slowly chip away at in my spare time.
