After a busy first month to the year and a little bit of a better idea of what music we might be seeing at least in the first half of the year, I thought I would throw together a list of releases that I am excited for and/or hoping for. These are not in any particular order.
Very excited for another Childish Gambino release following his last album ‘Awaken My Love!‘. I am intrigued to see if he continues with experimenting more thoroughly with the funk and soul sound, if we get an entirely different taste yet again, or (most unlikely) he dabbles in some more hip-hop. While there is nothing set in stone yet, we do know that he signed to RCA Records very recently. He has also dropped a number of hints over the last year and a bit indicating there is one more Childish Gambino release coming.
Most recently at a pre-Grammy show he once again acknowledged a Chance the Rapper collaboration, hinting that we may get something next year, in a ten minute freestyle. Although, I wouldn’t be too confident on that front given how long we’ve already been waiting for the Chance x Gambino mixtape. Fingers crossed we get some sort of news or project before the year finishes.
Wasting no time after an impressive three album releases last year, self-proclaimed boy band BROCKHAMPTON have stated their next album, ‘Team Effort‘, will be released at some point in 2018. Kevin Abstract actually tweeted very recently stating they are currently working on the album. I don’t have much else to say about this other than I am really excited to see what direction the group moves in following the Saturation trilogy.
The Voidz dropped a couple of very good tracks a couple of weeks ago (one of which was among my favourite releases in January). Alongside those singles the band announced they are releasing their second album, ‘Virtue‘, at the end of March this year. I am holding pretty high expectations given the standard of the singles they released and I am extremely interested to see what other sounds we get among the huge tracklisting.
Any Band on the Greyscale Records Roster
Seriously, this roster is stacked with so many incredible Aussie bands. I am yet to listen to a release of theirs that I did not like. I was pleasantly surprised with, and really enjoyed, the new Stuck Out EP which dropped yesterday (read my review here). Hopefully we should see a couple of EPs out of the recently signed bands Aburden and The Comfort in the near future.
Sydney group DMA’S mentioned a couple of weeks ago that their second record is completed. They are also in the midst of teasing something on the 13th of February (my guess is a single paired with an official album announcement). Their most recent single, ‘Dawning‘ was a solid follow up to their debut album, and gives me high hopes for their upcoming album. Tuesday’s announcement should give us a better idea of when to expect new tunes!
After hinting his next project, ‘Beerbongs & Bentleys‘, was going to be released in December 2017, Post Malone tweeted out saying “[I] need to make sure this album is perfect for you” and that the album won’t be coming for a little while yet. While I was not a heavy listener to his debut, ‘Stoney‘, I really enjoy the approach that Post has with his music. Thus, I am excited to see what we get once this newest project finally releases.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
After an incredible set of five albums released in 2017, King Gizzard really do not owe us anything else. With that said though, I really am interested to see if we get another project this year. My prediction would be yes, as the band has not gone without releasing some form of music since their inception in 2010.
I would like to see an extension of some of the ideas they presented in their last album, ‘Gumboot Soup‘. Most specifically, The Great Chain of Being. A stoner rock album would be something I think the group could really nail and the song shows that they definitely have the potential.
King Gizzard are doing some really extensive touring of America and Europe this year, so studio time may be limited. However, after last year’s efforts, alongside how many shows they played, we know this isn’t going to be an issue for them. We will see what 2018 holds for them!
Press Club are a band I followed pretty heavily last year. They currently only have two songs online (Headwreck and My Body’s Changing – listen to them, seriously), but their live show is on another level for a band that has been around for such a short time. I think I managed to squeeze in six gigs they performed at last year, but they played a hell of a lot more!
While they don’t have anything on the cards yet, I’m hoping for some sort of project from them this year. I just need more songs to listen to on repeat!
A sneaky post last week indicates that the writing process for Dear Seattle’s debut album has been completed. After how solid their self-titled EP was, I am chuffed to see they have more music coming so quickly. While I can’t be too confident we will see new music before the year is out, it’s definitely a possibility.
Another Aussie band coming off the back of a fantastic EP, Skegss gave us a couple of tweets letting us know they were “In Syd to finish mixing the albs” and shortly after that the mixing was done. Surely this means we get an album announcement shortly!
Thanks for reading! Let me know what releases you’re anticipating and/or excited for!
